Feral Cat Winter Shelters

Keep your colony warm this winter

January 14, 2010

Feral cats can survive in just about any climate - with a little help from their friends.  Providing warm, dry winter shelter is an essential part of colony caretaking in colder climates, which is just about everywhere in the United States so far this year.  For caretakers in Northeastern New Jersey, the Neighborhood Cats Winter Shelter (photo, r.) can be purchased for $70, complete with paint job, bedding and a tip sheet, and picked up in Montclair.  Call Cecilia Pollak at 973-744-9476 or email cpollak1@verizon.net.  A  portion of the proceeds will be donated to the charity Humane Montclair.

For more info on where you can purchase shelters and for inexpensive ideas for how to build one yourself, check out our Feral Cat Winter Shelter page in the How To section.  You'll learn how to turn a styrofoam shipping box into a great place to sleep (if you're a feral cat), how to turn a Rubbermaid bin into a winter-proof home and much more.  For more tips on winter care, have a look at our Preventing Water from Freezing page.  Also, once a week or so, you might consider adding a bit of Vitamin C to the cats' food to boost their immune systems.  See the article Vitamin C to the Rescue by Anitra Frazier on the Nutrition page.
