The premier low-cost spay/neuter certificate program in New York City is administered by Muffins Pet Connection (www.muffins.org, 718-833-7988). On their website, they list 82 participating vets in NYC, Long Island and Westchester. Before purchasing a certificate for a feral cat, be sure to call the veterinarian and find out if they have experience working with ferals and will accept a cat in a trap. Not all of them will, so be sure to find out first. The certificate fees are $38 for a male cat, $51 for a female. (Mention "Neighborhood Cats" and get a discount of $3 per cat!) Shots & antibiotics not included.

In order to more easily identify veterinarians who work with ferals, Muffins Connection has teamed up with the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals and the NYC Feral Cat Initiative to create the MAMA (Muffin's And Mayor's Alliance) spay/neuter coupon program. Included in the coupon price ($58 for females; $45 for males) are spay/neuter, rabies vaccination and eartip. Any other services or costs are strictly optional. For a list of participating vets and to order coupons, click here.

Two other low-cost certificate programs available are run by national organizations.  Contact them for rates and details and be sure to check that a participating veterinarian has experience working with feral cats:

SPAY/USA
all 1-800-248-SPAY; phone counselors are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST.  Or purchase a certificate online at:  www.spayusa.org

Friends of Animals (FOA)
call 1-800-321-PETS, or purchase certificates online at:  www.friendsofanimals.org

(Note: we repeatedly receive reports from people who purchased spay/neuter certificates and were then unexpectedly charged for services they assumed were already included in the certificate price. To make sure this does not happen to you, request a detailed estimate before any services are rendered.)

Below are selected veterinarians, clinics and programs which work with feral cats at low cost.  Please contact them directly for their procedures and for any updated information.
