41 Feral Cats Neutered in Far Rockaway Good Neighbor Program
December 15, 2002

The Good Neighbor Program, a joint project of Neighborhood Cats and ASPCA Cares, aims at resolving a community's entire feral cat problem at once.  One bungalow community in Far Rockaway served as a model example of the program when, on December 15, 2003, 41 feral cats living in the neighborhood were neutered.  Before the trapping began, local resident and caretaker Carol Chiffriller gathered neighbors together to share information on the locations and number of cats.  An empty shed was converted into a holding space and regular feeding patterns established.  The community cooperated in withholding food and all the cats (except one - there's always one!) were trapped within a matter of days. Now, with the odor from spraying, the noise from fighting and the litters of kittens either at an end or dramatically lessened, the cats will be better able to  live as good neighbors with their human counterparts.
