NYPD Firing Range Hits a Bullseye for Feral Cats
November 19, 2002

The NYPD firing range on City Island in the Bronx is patrolled by cadets learning to shoot, the department's special operations division, the bomb squad and a colony of 27 feral cats. The cats were well-cared for by officers in terms of being well fed and looked after, but the population rose to the point where there were too many kittens and too much expense when they started to get sick. TNR offered a solution and, in a span of three days, Neighborhood Cats volunteers and NYPD officers (led by chief caretaker, Officer Colleen Curran), trapped 25 of the 27 cats.

Interestingly, it turned out 11 of the cats had already been neutered - but not eartipped. Fortunately, the vet on the ASPCA's mobile spay/neuter van, which drove up to the range, was able to tell prior to operating on them. Now, all 25 are not only neutered, but have a straight line cut on the tip of their left ear, so they need not be trapped and sedated again.

Another fascinating aspect of this colony worth noting is the presence of possums and raccoons in the adjacent woods. Officers have seen the cats, possums and raccoons all eating out of the same dish - at the same time!  It would appear the animals, left to their own devices, know how to get along just fine.
