Bronx County Jail Releases Ferals
January 21, 2003
In
its ongoing colloboration with the NYC Department of Correction,
Neighborhood Cats trapped 5 of 6 feral cat colony members living on the
grounds of the Bronx House of Detention for Men. The cats were then
neutered by the ASPCA's mobile van and held for recovery inside the jail
(which is currently vacant). One of the lucky felines, named Jojo, turned
out to be a rather friendly abandoned cat who had been staying at the jail
since last summer. With
the help of the Humane Society of NY, Jojo has found himself in a warm
home instead of behind bars! Jojo's
case does point out the need for ongoing management of neutered feral cat
colonies. New arrivals in the form of abandoned or lost domestic
cats need to be quickly trapped and, if possible, placed in homes or, if
that isn't possible, neutered to prevent a new reproductive cycle from
beginning in the colony.
