1. Disaster Preparation for Feral Cat Programs & Caretakers
Instructor: Laura Bevan, The Humane Society of the United
States
Feral cat caretakers plan for daily care, sterilization and
other veterinary care, but what about planning for disasters? What
can you do to plan for taking care of the cats if a natural or
man-made emergency impacts the area where your cats live? What if
evacuation of the area is required or re-entry is restricted for
some reason? What if you are so personally affected that you cannot
maintain your commitment to your feral cat colony? Disasters like
Hurricane Katrina have had a major impact on feral cat programs.
Learn how to continue caring for feral cats during emergencies and
how feral cat programs can be included in community animal disaster
plans.
2. Designing an Effective Communitywide TNR Program
Instructors: Melissa Newton, AzCATS; Holly Sizemore, No More
Homeless Pets Utah
The practice of TNR on a large, community-wide scale is a new
and growing movement that requires careful planning and
organization. This workshop will cover the necessary methods for
success, including collaborating with other animal groups and
agencies, working with the municipality and local laws,
administering the program, forming a strategic plan and correctly
allocating resources, selecting equipment, holding training
workshops, obtaining municipal funding and tracking results.
3. Funding for Ferals
Instructors: Kit Jenkins, PETsMART Charities; Paul Jolly, PETCO
Foundation; Suzan Shaw, CARE Feline Rescue & Orange County Animal
Services Advisory Board
Learn about the different types of funding from the experts
including
Municipal Funding, Sponsorships, Special Events & Grants.

1. Advanced Colony Caretaker Training
Instructors: Meredith Weiss, Neighborhood Cats & New York
City Feral Cat Initiative Holly Sizemore, No More Homeless Pets Utah
Take your Feral Cat Colony management to the next level by
learning best practices for caring for the cats and heading off
problems before they grow. Topics covered include resolving neighbor
disputes and establishing good community relations, feeding methods
to avoid wildlife and public health issues, the best types of food
to provide, types of winter shelter, arranging vet care, finding
recovery space, safely handling feral cats, dealing with nuisance
complaints and advanced trapping techniques for pregnant moms, baby
kittens and hard-to-catch cats.
2. Feral Cats & Wildlife:
Moving from Confrontation to Collaboration
Instructors: Bryan Kortis, Neighborhood Cats; Eric Stiles,
Vice President for Conservation and Stewardship, New Jersey Audubon
Society
Evolve beyond the “cats vs. birds” debate by working with
wildlife groups to identify common goals and find mutually
acceptable solutions to difficult feral cat/wildlife issues. The
ground-breaking work of the New Jersey Feral Cat & Wildlife
Coalition will be examined, along with other successful
collaborations. 3. Organizing & Running a Feral Cat Mass Spay/Neuter Clinic
Instructor: Frank Hamilton, Animal Coalition of Tampa (ACT)
Effective feral cat management relies on maximizing the number
of cats that are
sterilized. Learn the business of organizing and running an
all-volunteer MASH style clinic that will help attendees design and
implement their own TNR program. The program will include a virtual
tour of a program that has sterilized over 6000 cats. |
